Advancing Medical Nutrition Through Functional Food Science
The International Society of Medical Nutrition (ISMN) was established in response to some of the most pressing healthcare challenges of the twenty-first century, including the global rise of chronic diseases, population aging, metabolic disorders, and increasing healthcare burdens. Although modern medicine has achieved remarkable advances in acute care, surgery, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical therapies, healthcare systems worldwide continue to face challenges in long-term disease management, prevention, rehabilitation, and improving quality of life.
Growing scientific evidence demonstrates that many chronic conditions—including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, sarcopenia, inflammation-related diseases, and cognitive decline—are closely associated with metabolic regulation, immune balance, nutritional status, gut microbiota, lifestyle factors, and long-term physiological resilience. These challenges require a new interdisciplinary approach that integrates clinical medicine, nutritional science, and functional food innovation into an evidence-based framework.
It is within this global context that ISMN was established.
